There are a few reasons your car may be overheating. The most likely culprit is a leak in the cooling system or one of the hoses. When this happens, the coolant can leak out which means there\u2019s nothing regulating the heat produced from the engine. Some of the other causes may include an improper ratio of water to coolant (it should be about 50\/50), blocked hoses, problems with the radiator fan, or a broken water pump.<\/p>\n

What should I do if my car is overheating?<\/h3>\n

You can prevent overheating by keeping an eye on the engine temperature gauge as well as the coolant levels, re-filling the coolant as needed. If you notice the meter creeping a little closer to the red zone, turn off the air conditioning and turn on the heat while opening the windows. This will help draw some of the heat out of the engine. It\u2019s also important not to brake too much, as this will cause extra strain on the engine. If the needle moves even closer to the red zone, pull over immediately and open the hood to let some of the heat escape. Driving for too long with an overheating engine can cost you hundreds or even thousands of dollars in repairs.<\/p>\n
