New Exhaust System for the Cayenne GTS

Few things are more satisfying than turning the key of a Porsche roadster and giving the gas pedal a couple of gentle pushes to hear finely tuned notes pour out of the finely tuned engine. Porsche engineers have made some interesting upgrades for the new exhaust system for the Cayenne GTS that will make the high-performance crossover SUV a treat for all five senses. American muscle cars are coveted, in part, because of the deep and throaty sounds produced by their V-8 engines. The apparent goal of the Porsche engineers working on the Cayenne GTS was to get a similar sound using a V-6 engine. Let’s take a look at a few things we’ve learned about this technology before you come to visit the highly trained professionals at the Porsche Delaware showroom.

“The Cayenne GTS Coupé doesn’t sound like a muscle man, it sounds more like a fit athlete,” Markus Sitzler, Team Lead Vehicle Periphery SUV-Engines, said in a Porsche press release.

How does it work?

Exhaust sounds come from the waste gasses that are vented out of the engine to the tailpipes after the fuel-air mixture is burned. The enhanced sound coming from the new Porsche Cayenne GTS is delivered via a precisely plumbed series of exhaust pipes that exit the vehicle from a pair of centrally located oval-shaped tailpipes. There is a lot of complex engineering involved in obtaining the desired sonorous effect. Porsche accomplished its goal by using a proprietary valve system that opens and closes based on how much load the engine is under.

The sound profile produced by the Cayenne GTS has been described in Porsche media releases as being quieter under a full engine load but will still have a richness to the bass tones that have been the goal all along.
